Glossary

The vocabulary of doing business on B2B.ID.

Every term used on this site, defined plainly. If a word here means something specific on the platform — B2B ID, request, recommendation, matter — this is what it means.

B

B2B ID
A structured business identity for a law firm, practice group or lawyer on the B2B.ID platform. It describes practice areas, jurisdictions, industries, experience, proof, relationships, what the firm refers out and what it is looking for — in a consistent format that clients, lawyers and professionals can discover, recommend and act on. 'Your firm has a website. Give it a B2B ID.' What is a B2B ID?
B2B.ID
The B2B platform for businesses to do business. lawyers.b2b.id is its legal vertical: the platform for lawyers and law firms to get clients, be recommended, find lawyers and build referral, co-counsel and professional relationships. B2B.ID is not a law firm, a directory, a lead-generation service or a community.

C

Client industry
The sectors a firm's clients come from — construction, healthcare, technology, real estate, financial services and so on. Industry is a first-class field on a B2B ID because clients and referrers search by it.
Co-counsel
A lawyer or firm engaged alongside another on the same matter — for a jurisdiction, a specialism, a phase or capacity. B2B.ID lets lawyers state the co-counsel roles they take and find co-counsel by court, matter type and industry. Co-counsel

D

Discovery
How clients, lawyers and professionals find a B2B ID on the platform: by practice area, jurisdiction, industry, matter type, role (for example local counsel) and the relationships described on it. Discovery is driven by the content of B2B IDs, not by paid placement on this site. Find lawyers

I

Illustrative data
The label B2B.ID for Lawyers places on any example B2B ID, matter, request or relationship shown on this website. Names, firms, lawyers, matters and outcomes in those examples are invented to demonstrate the product; they are not real, and no statistics or results are implied.

J

Jurisdiction
The states, countries and courts where a lawyer is admitted and actually practises. Listed on a B2B ID so that discovery, referrals and co-counsel requests can be matched to where a matter is.

L

Local counsel
A lawyer admitted in a particular court or jurisdiction who acts with out-of-state or out-of-country counsel on a matter there. 'Available as local counsel in …' is one of the most useful lines a B2B ID can carry.
Looking for
The structured statement of intent on a B2B ID: the clients, matters, co-counsel, local counsel, referral relationships or professional partnerships the firm currently wants. It lets others send the right request.

M

Matter
A specific legal need a client or professional brings to the platform — described by matter type, jurisdiction, industry and urgency — that lawyers can discover and respond to with a request. Illustrative matters shown on this site are demonstrations, not real cases. Matters

O

Opportunity
A request for legal capability posted by a business, firm or professional: local counsel needed, a specialist for a phase of a matter, a panel or partnership opening. Lawyers whose B2B IDs fit can respond. Opportunities

P

Practice area
The field of law a lawyer or firm practises: corporate, litigation, employment, immigration, intellectual property, real estate, estate planning and others. A B2B ID goes one level deeper, describing specific matter types within each practice area.
Professional partnership
An ongoing relationship between a law firm and a non-lawyer professional or business that serves the same clients — accountants, tax advisers, bankers, brokers, consultants, insurers. Formed and described on B2B.ID through Request Partnership. Partnerships
Proof
Information on a B2B ID a reader can check or the firm can substantiate: admissions, years in practice, representative matter types, publications, speaking, memberships, and relationships described on the platform. B2B.ID does not certify or vet lawyers and is transparent about what is and is not verified. Trust

R

Reciprocity
The habit that keeps referral and professional relationships alive: both sides looking for matters and introductions for the other. It does not require a ledger or equal counts, only reliability.
Recommendation
A structured endorsement of a lawyer or firm by another professional on B2B.ID, attached to the B2B ID so that someone else can act on it. A recommendation carries the recommender's own B2B ID, so its context is visible. Get recommended
Referral
One lawyer or professional sending a client to another lawyer, usually because of practice area, jurisdiction, conflict or capacity. On B2B.ID a referral is a capability — carried by Request Introduction and described on B2B IDs — not the definition of the platform. Any arrangement between lawyers about a referral is theirs, under the rules of their jurisdiction. Referral relationships
Referral relationship
An ongoing, usually reciprocal arrangement between two lawyers or firms in adjacent practices who send each other the matters they do not take. On B2B.ID it can be described on both B2B IDs, where it becomes visible proof.
Refers out
The structured field on a B2B ID listing the matter types, jurisdictions and situations a firm does not take and sends elsewhere. It tells other lawyers the firm is a potential source of matters, and tells clients the firm knows its limits.
Request
The way business starts on B2B.ID instead of DMs, rooms or cold emails. Every request carries both parties' B2B IDs and a stated purpose, and the receiving side accepts or declines. There are three: Request Introduction, Request Meeting and Request Partnership. How it works
Request Introduction
A request that connects two parties through a third — typically a client to a lawyer, or a lawyer to a professional — with agreed context. It is how a referral moves on B2B.ID. Refer a matter
Request Meeting
A request to talk directly with another lawyer, firm or professional for a stated purpose: evaluating co-counsel, discussing a potential referral, or meeting a prospective client who has discovered your B2B ID.
Request Partnership
A request to form an ongoing relationship — a referral relationship, a local-counsel or co-counsel arrangement, or a professional partnership — describing what each side would send or do. When accepted, the relationship can be described on both B2B IDs. Professional partnerships

S

Share your B2B ID
Putting the link to your B2B ID where people already find you — email signature, website, bar profile, proposals — so that 'Send me your B2B ID' replaces explaining your practice. Anyone with the link can read it and send a request. What is a B2B ID?
Structured identity
Business information written in defined fields rather than free prose, so that different firms can be compared and acted on. A B2B ID is a structured identity; a website bio or a directory listing is not.

V

Verification
Confirmation of specific facts a firm chooses to add to its B2B ID, shown with what has and has not been verified. Verification is not an endorsement, a ranking or a guarantee of quality or outcome. Trust
